BRESCIA
Santa Giulia – City Museum
Via dei Musei, 81/b - tel. 030 297 7834 www.asm.brescia.it/musei
The museum covers the history, art and mysticism of the city from prehistoric times to today. The museum is situated within an ancient monastery founded by the Longobard King Desiderio, and his wife Ansa built over the ruins of a grand Roman house, a setting unlike anywhere else in Europe.
The monastery owned property in Franciacorta, all documented in the "Polittico di Santa Giulia", an ancient tome written in the late 9th century. However the earliest record listing the property owned by the Monastery of San Salvatore in Franciacorta (later renamed the Monastery of Santa Giulia) dates from as early as 766. It is a charter in which Adelchi, son of King Desiderio, defined the privileges he was to grant to the Monastery that had been bequeathed to him by his grandfather Verissimo and uncles Donnolo and Adelchi.
The museum houses the basilica of San Salvatore, the oratory of Santa Maria in Solario, the 15th century church of Santa Giulia and cloisters dating from the renaissance. It regularly hosts important art exhibitions.
